A great book for building good habits

Book review: Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones

By James Clear

Vikes Rating: 10/10

This book is fantastic. Clear wrote Atomic Habits to make it easy for his readers to understand that only a minimal 1% effort on a daily basis can change your life. He shows us these small efforts, ‘atomic habits’ (that we might not regularly consider life changing) when applied daily, ultimately can make a huge impact.

So how small are these 1% changes really?

Clear uses relatable real life examples and has a sense of humor anyone can get along with. If you are an athlete, it can be as simple as changing the way you sleep; considering what kind of pillows you use, even the fabric of your uniforms. Each chapter breaks down how to make good habits easy and make bad habits difficult with the 4 Laws of Behavior Change. Each law is explained in detail in a way that you not only absorb what you are reading but you want to apply to your life.

My top 3 takeaways from this book are:

  • If you want better results, then forget about setting goals. Focus on your system instead.
  • The most effective way to change your habits is to focus not on what you want to achieve, but on who you wish to become.
  • One of the most practical ways to eliminate a bad habit is to reduce exposure to the cue that causes it.

Throughout the book, Clear conveniently provides readers with examples, cheat sheets and downloadable templates on his website. These tools allow readers to stay active in their commitment to make small changes daily. Applying his methods have made me a better runner and a goal getter. I feel accomplished daily and that is a powerful feeling. I loved this book, and I’m sure you will too. I recommend this book if you are looking to make big differences in your life.

If you’ve read it, let me know what you think!
